Wicked Weed Brewing Switches Sides

So, let’s talk about Wicked Weed Brewing for a minute.
First, a little history:
Wicked Weed Brewing was founded in December of 2012 and is based in Asheville, NC.  Their original brewpub typically has about 25 beers on tap. Wicked Weed is known for specializing in west coast style hoppy ales, open fermented Belgian beers, and barrel aged sour beers and they have won several medals across all of their styles.  The company built a fourth facility last year that is entirely devoted to farmhouse, wild-fermented, and sour beers and have the first taproom on the East Coast dedicated to sours.  All told, Wicked Weed produces over 150 different beers a year, has (or maybe had) a huge fanbase, and is arguably the top of the food chain in the craft beer kingdom of Asheville.  You can imagine then, there was some backlash to this headline:

Humanimal Stasis

A combination of working far too much and getting ready for a wedding has cut into both my drinking and my writing about drinking time. That said, when the opportunity arises to take a ride out to a brewery, I jump at it. This time that opportunity came in the form of an impromptu trip out to Ardmore, PA and Tired Hands with the elusive Beers4Plat. Plat and I shot out to Tired Hands just to try a bunch of their stuff on draft, but were pleasantly surprised to find they were also doing a release for the Heavy Gem Project.
Heavy Gem, as near as I can tell, is a collaborative effort between Tired Hands and Half Acre. By terming Heavy Gem a “project,” I suspect this will be more than a one off collaboration. Could this be the beer equivalent of Pearl Jam and Soundgarden coming together to form Temple of the Dog? (Yes I know that’s not the actual history of the band, don’t ruin a good metaphor)

Vault Brewing Company

Let’s talk for a minute about Vault Brewing Company.  Buying and trying craft beers, IPAs being the biggest example, has become a ritual of stalking the social media pages of breweries, waiting for a release announcement, and lining up, for hours on occasion, to pick up the newest and freshest beers.  This is not a complaint by the way.  There is something very enjoyable about grabbing friends, hopping in a car, and road tripping to a brewery to wait in line to snag some beers.  I’ve met cool people and had great conversations in these lines.  From time to time though, there is something to be said for just showing up, picking up beers, and getting on with your day.  For me, enter Vault Brewing Company… Continue reading Vault Brewing Company

You have to respect the Germans’ love of beer.  As more and more breweries host a yoga class followed by a beer afterwards, German steps the beer yoga game up by making the bottle of beer part of the routine.  How do you say Namaste in German?  http://bieryoga.de/english/

Intensely Juicy Dank Beautiful (Copy & Paste)

I hear a lot of different things about Tired Hands Brewing Company out of Ardmore, Pa: “they suck,” “they’re awesome,” “their beers are bizarre,” “their beers are delicious,” etc.  I haven’t had a chance to make it out to their brewery yet, but they are probably my next trip.  A brewery so polarizing has to be worth the drive.  I was recently able to acquire a can of their peach milkshake (which I’m very much looking forward to trying) along with this little beast…the aptly named Intensely Juicy Dank Beautiful (Copy & Paste).   Continue reading Intensely Juicy Dank Beautiful (Copy & Paste)

Hype Train


It’s only fitting that I do my first review on probably my favorite local brewery out of Fairfield, NJ. Magnify Brewing has been making some good noise around the area and it may have to do a lot with their New England style of brewing. There hasn’t been a beer that I’ve had out of their camp that I have not seriously enjoyed I’m excited to see how Magnify continues to grow and progress. Let’s get into the beer no? Road Trip!

The Guerillas are back at it and we got some company. DSquared and I brought our better halves with us (wifeys) on our beer journey up north to our beloved breweries. This is pretty exciting because who doesn’t want to share their passion with their significant other right? Green vs. Green

I have quite a backlog of beer currently, but because I’m an idiot, I just keep buying more rather than drinking all of what I have.  That fact did let me do some interesting “research” however.  (For a frame of reference, I did this back in October).  Plat and I recently (in October) took a second trip up to craft beer juggernaut Treehouse Brewing in Monson, MA to pick up some Julius and another flagship beer: Green.  Since I still had some Green left over from an earlier trip, I had an interesting opportunity to compare a fresh Green with a 2 month old Green.  Breweries always tell you with these “juice bomb” type IPAs to drink them fresh…but does it really matter?  Let’s see.  Continue reading Green vs. Green
